First time VR

In this blog, we describe our approach to completing Assignment 1 and our experience using the Oculus Quest in Spatial.

Group 1 started the group meeting via Microsoft Teams. We did this to make sure everyone understood how to set up the VR glasses and connect to Spatial.io. After some teething problems with the microphone, we finally managed to get together in the room.

The main task was to create a design thinking outline, but this was not possible for us in the first meeting. Everyone was busy trying out what possibilities the VR world offers. From giant cats, champagne and cocktails at the table to sitting around a campfire, everything was there.

After everyone got familiar with the functions, we thought about how we could solve the task in the most sensible way. We decided to take a paper airplane as an example project and go through the different design thinking phases.

The different phases could look like this:

We noticed that you can get very creative with platforms like spatial. This is made possible by functions such as drawing in the air spawning 3D objects or direct integration of images and presentations.

We could also imagine other scenarios because there is a room that resembles a lecture hall. Here, for example, the professor could hold his lecture online without everyone having their camera turned off like in Zoom. A feeling of presence could arise. Even a clapping function is built in which  ensures  the applause at the end of the lecture.

In conclusion it can be said that VR is more personal than a standard video call with far more possibilities to collaborate. Especially in times of covid, it was a nice and fun experience and maybe in the future a great choice for collaborating project where it is not possible to meet in person.
